9/27/07 - DEP Proposal to Incorporate MSHA Regs
- In a followup to DEP's proposal to incorporate certain MSHA regulations into PA law you can check out the proposed changes in the following document. The changes were approved by the Mining and Reclamation Advisory Board and accepted by the Environmental Quality Board. The comment period ends shortly. Click here to open the proposal on the Pennsylvania Bulletin site.

3/6/07 - Highwall Hazards Powerpoint
- Those who attended the Spring Thaw in Wyomissing were treated to this presentation from MSHA's Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center. You can click here to download a zipped version of the powerpoint file.

11/22/06 - Highwall Posters
- Highwalls were a big topic among the folks who met for our Ground Control Summit yesterday. I found these posters in pdf format that MSHA issued several years ago that are a great tool to help continue the focus on these hazards.

5/12/06 - Injury Maps
- This is a really cool online tool that allows you to pick types of injuries and generate state or national maps. Choose Drowning, Fall, Fire and Burn-Related, Firearm Homicide, Traffic-Related Motor Vehicle, Poisoning, Suicide, or Traumatic Brain Injury .

5/5/06 - Costs of Injuries
- This CDC fact sheet breaks down some interesting statistics on unintentional injuries.

3/14/06 - Heaven Can Wait Seatbelt Video
- For those of you who made it to our annual awards banquet, here's a link to the seatbelt video I used in my short safety presentation. I'll try to get the powerpoint loaded here as well.

2/23/06 - Are MSHA Fines a Topic for Training
- Certainly mine safety is a bigger topic among the general public than usual. Miners are just as curious about all the press that MSHA is getting and "learning" things they never new. Fines have been a big topic of discussion and miners have their own opinions. The link above will open a pdf document that MSHA has on it's site discussing it's take on some inaccuracies in they see in the press.

12/09/05 - Liberty Mutual Workplace Safety Index
- Here's a full report that mixes some good news of declining numbers of workplace injuries along with the bad news of increasing costs to employers.

11/30/05 - Concussion Tool Kit
- Okay, these materials, provided by the CDC are for coaches, but have some valuable information on concussions, in the form of wallet cards, guides, posters, and even a video. Great for your next first aid talk... or pass it on to your kid's soccer coach.

9/12/05 - FMCSA Share the Road Safely
- Materials for everybody on the road from truck drivers to pedestrians. Materials for training, sending home, or sharing with the community,

8/22/05 - MSHA Do the Right Thing Materials
- No, I didn't take the month off, though one seems to have slipped by without a resource of the week. Here's a whole collection of powerpoint and pdf files to supplement MSHA's "Do the Right Thing - Slam Risks" program.

7/18/05 - MSHA Blasting Alert
- This PDF file highlights an unplanned detonation in June and best practices to avoid such mishaps. Good to add to training on explosives.

7/11/05 - Tractor Supply Co. Welding Guide
- Once it loads, click on "what the experts know" and you'll find definitions, techniques, and safety tips.

6/20/05 - Essilor Laboratories Web Site
- Eye protection information including a short video on ultra-impact polycarbonate lenses that you can download (right click on video link).

6/13/05 - NORTHEAST DISTRICT ACCIDENT ABSTRACTS
- Check out the info on several mishaps that occurred in MSHA's NE District that fortunately did not result in fatalities, but could have. Great training or toolbox talk material.

6/6/05 - JUNE IS NATIONAL SAFETY MONTH!
- Visit the National Safety Council's page for a new tip each weekday in June along with links to other resources.

4/11/05 - MSHA GUARDING DVD NOW AVAILABLE
- It was mentioned a few posts ago, but wasn't actually available until more recently. The newest DVD is full of great materials to use in your safety training program.

4/4/05 - UPDATED MSHA GUARDING BOOKLET
- Click here for a pdf version of the latest guarding booklet (2004) from MSHA. Includes some changes to the concept of area guarding.

3/28/05 - OSHA HEARING CONSERVATION eTOOL
- Check out the latest eTool on OSHA's site developed in alliance with the National Hearing Conservation Association. Right, it's OSHA, but the material is still a help in MSHA-land.

3/21/05 - HOLIDAY EGG SAFETY TIP
- Just in time for Easter Eggs, here are some off-the-job safety tips for handling eggs. Oh, and don't hide them in any quarries, either!

3/14/05 - NOISE, EARS AND HEARING PROTECTION
- One more installment on the noise theme. This page gives you a concise training tool on the affect of noise and how to protect yourself thanks to the City of Vancouver and the American Academy of Otolaryngology.

2/28/05 - UNDERSTANDING DECIBELS
- Here's your chance to get real technical. Get your scientific calculator out and give it a shot. Probably not a tool to train your miners with, but if you find your way through it you may understand those pesky decibels a bit better yourself.

2/21/05 - CRANE SAFETY FOR THE SITE SUPERINTENDENT
- Continuing with our Crane theme, our friends at OSHA have this great little streaming video that helps the site person "recognize when experts are behaving like experts" as Dave puts it.

2/14/05 - CRANE ACCIDENTS
- Those of you who were able to attend the fine Spring Thaw that MSHA held last week in Reading will recognize this link as mentioned by presenter Dave Emeigh. There are some photos and things available to all visitors while other features require a subscription.

1/31/05 - HOLMES PROFESSIONAL MINER PROGRAM

1/3/05 - Safety Resources CD
- Now that the holidays are over maybe I can get back on schedule (ha!). You'll notice that several weeks have slipped by without a post, but you can make up for it with this CD. At the January 25th Awards Banquet we will be giving out copies of CD's with several members PowerPoint presentations and other great safety materials on them. But you'll have to attend to get them. - It's about time we take a break and send a Power Point greeting your way! These are serious safety tips though, from cooking to being around holiday candles, along with a variety of graphics you can borrow for your own thanksgiving presentation all courtesy of Georgia Southern University's Environmental Safety Services.

11/15/04 - New NIOSH Respirator Logic Document
- If you manage a respiratory protection program this updated document will help you choose the appropriate respirator and meet current NIOSH policy as well as MSHA and OSHA regulations. You can read the document at this link or download it to print or study.

11/08/04 - CMSP Prep and Testing
- If you aren't a Certified Mine Safety Professional or know someone else who wants to be one, here's a great PA chance. A preparation course and test is being conducted in Washington, PA December 6 - 9. Information is available on this web site, the home page for CMSP's and International Society of Mine Safety Professionals.

11/01/04 - MSHA S.L.A.M. PROGRAM
- Stop, Look, Analyze, Manage. You may have gotten a poster and some trifold cards to promote this concept at your operation. If not, or you need more handouts, you can find them online here along with links to the webcast from TRAM where the program was introduced.

10/25/04 - PORTABLE TANKER ACCESS SYSTEM
- Providing safe access to tankers has always been a tricky issue, even before the fatalities experienced in the industry this year due to such falls. Here's one product to consider. I don't have any experience to me, but looks like it would solve some of the problems I've encountered with such devices.
